On February 9th, after a long hiatus, The Vines have finally returned to the studio to record album five in Sydney.
This time the guys are working with Australian electronic/urban producer, Chris Colonna, who recently worked on a few tracks with Beck. Chris and his sister, Pia, better known as the band Bumblebeez, made a notorious name for themselves by cutting and pasting together the kind of conflicting musical ideologies that should seldom be fused. Their first US release was titled The Printz, although this is a compilation comprising all the tracks from their first two Australian EPs The White Printz and The Red Printz (known to fans as the Printz saga). Their schizophrenic debut LP, Prince Umberto and the Sister of Ill, was released in 2007 and featured the feel good summer hits “Dr. Love” and “Rio”. Prince Umberto & The Sister Of Ill is one bands mysterious attempt to cram a lifetime of dreams onto 40 minutes of tape. A kaleidoscopic trip of A.D.D. jams taking in sounds from 1920 to 2020, a dizzying trip through popular music from yesterday to tomorrow with bits and pieces of doo wop, garage, punk rock, hip hop, reggae, R'nB, grime and acid all seeping into the mix. Bumblebeez have also toured with music greats, Radiohead and N.E.R.D.
Back in 2008, The Vines had to cancel a few tour dates in the interest of Craig Nicholls’ mental health. On November 14th, 2009, the guys decided to get back on the stage by supporting their long time heroes, You Am I, at their favorite haunt, the Annandale Hotel. Billed as The Crimes, the guys put on a tight set and performed a new song called "Get Away" which will appear on album five. See gig photos here.
Along with a new upcoming album, The Vines have a new manager, Todd Wagstaff, of Parker & Mr French. Todd has twenty years experience in building global careers for his artists. In that time has signed, recorded, marketed or managed a list that includes The Veronicas, Bluejuice, Empire of the Sun, You Am I, James Reyne, Pnau, Wendy Matthews, Lost Valentinos and Holly Valance.
Todd recently told DTI, "I signed the band to a record deal at the very start. I licensed the first single to XL, made the debut album with them, did the deal with Capitol and Heavenly. Set them up and then left it for others to run with. All went a bit pear shaped along the way so now I am back to pick up the pieces and return the band to their rightful position at the top of the pile."
We're looking forward to it!
